NAMING PHOEBE’S CAT
For Phoebe Norman
(Phoebe Norman reading the new poem written by her grandfather.)
Phoebe heard a little cat
Crying in the trees,
“I’m very hungry and I’m lost.
Won’t you help me, please?”
Phoebe introduced her Gram
To the little cat.
Her Grandma said, “I guess we can
Do something about that.”
They put the cat into the car
And then they drove her home.
They showed the cat to Grandfather
Who said, “No need to roam.
Let’s feed you till you’re nice and full,
Then you’ll be glad you came.”
That’s what they did. Then Phoebe said,
“Our kitty needs a name.
What shall we call her?” Phoebe asked,
“She has sharp teeth and nails.”
“That’s very true,” her Grandpa said,
“Her nibbling never fails
To make our fingers tingle, too.”
He thought until he sang,
“I’ve got her name!” “What?” Phoebe asked.
“Why, it’s ‘Claudette McFang!’”
(Claudette in a sandstone planter from Arizona; we wonder if she'll sprout anything.)
